I received an e-mail from a colleague today asking me to sign a petition regarding the UN's inaction regarding Darfur.  After years of bloodshed, the UN had finally authorized the use of troops to try and enforce some order in the region.  That authorization came LAST August, but the troops have yet to be deployed.  It reminded me that nothing really happens unless people get involved.  In most things; business or politics, people are reluctant to act when there is the risk of failure.  Our democracy teaches us that it takes action on behalf of the people to move our elected officials into action in many cases.  The worlds democracy's have a rich history of this.  Here in the US, India, South Africa, and others.

While I often ignore the 'spam' I receive about conditions in other countries, other states, or other communities, it just took a familiar name in my e-mail to remind me of our obligation to engage ourselves in democracy.  Cast your vote, voice opinion, stand your ground, or offer help in the best way you can.

I'm thankful for those who stir others into action.  They remind me that our rights are only useful if we exercise them.  I just read that the UN troops are finally being deployed.  No doubt it was in part thanks to the call to action that a few organizers shaped into a massive show of public opinion.

Thank you to the activists.  You help keep us honest, informed, and vigilant.
